Community Involvement

Connecting With Communities & People Where We Live and Work

To grow and prosper, communities require care.  It is the work of many hands, sharing many talents, many hours, and many gifts.

Matt Russo and the members of the team share this commitment to the community in which we live and work.  Among the many organizations that the Northwestern Mutual Midtown NYC office supports are:

  • Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation
  • Circle of Care
  • American Heart Association
  • Team Connor Childhood Cancer Foundation
  • York Street Project
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Foundation, and the list goes on.

Community Impact Award Winners 2009

President & Chief Executive Officer Ed Zore presents Matt Russo with the Community Impact Award in honor of Team Connor at the 2009 Eastern Regional Meeting

Cancer is the number one disease killer of children and kills more children per year than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, asthma and AIDS combined, yet the budget of the National Cancer Institute allocates only 3% of its funds to pediatric cancer research.

Team Connor, a non-profit foundation, was created by Tait & Joy Cruse, in honor of their son Connor who courageously fought a four and a half year battle with Neuroblastoma. Tait Cruse is the Managing Partner of Northwestern Mutual, The Texas Financial Group – Dallas, and launched the Team Connor Foundation to raise awareness, support families, fund treatments, and help find a cure for pediatric cancer.

Matt and Tonya Russo created the “500 for 500” relay race in support of Team Connor and hosted over 80 runners from 12 different states at their home in New Canaan, Connecticut.  The goal of this event was to raise funds and engage people in the office, community, and around the country to run 500 miles. Participants ran during the day and throughout the entire night for over 500 miles, in a relay that lasted for 60 hours. The relay raised close to $500,000!

The Community Impact Award recognizes those teams from network and district offices committed to their local nonprofit community, and awards $50,000 in each of the four regions to the nonprofit partners. In 2009, the inaugural year of the Community Impact Award, Matt Russo with the Northwestern Mutual Midtown Manhattan office and his team in New York City were honored at the Eastern Regional Meeting for their support of Team Connor, a foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research.

Matt accepted the award from President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Zore, as a video played overhead, sharing the powerful story of Team Connor and its dedication and commitment to beating pediatric cancer.
